WHO WE ARE

At ROKA, we believe Aikido is more than just a martial art—it’s a practice of self-discovery and growth.

Our training blends movement, mindfulness, and practical self-defense in a supportive, collaborative environment.

No matter your experience level or background, you’ll find a community that values progress, not perfection.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, a martial artist returning after a break, or someone looking to transition into Aikido from another discipline, you’ll feel at home here.

Meet Our Lead Instructor

Aikido, for me, is more than self-defense; it’s a way to understand who you are and how you respond to life’s challenges. On the mat, we explore physical, emotional, and mental boundaries in a safe, structured, and compassionate space. Each practice is a chance to grow your confidence, stay grounded under pressure, and align your actions with the person you truly want to be.

Everyone needs a structure that helps them reflect, a guidepost for living with intention. ROKA is a group of like-minded people who form deep connections through shared experience, challenge, and growth. Aikido offers that rare mix of martial aptitude, discipline, self-discovery, and community.  And the best part? All of this starts with one simple move: just show up. (Seriously. That’s the whole secret.)

When she’s not guiding students through the flow of Aikido at River of Ki, you’ll often find Cara-Michele helping midlife women reclaim their energy and confidence through her work as a wellness strategist, acupuncturist, and personal trainer. She’s the founder of Strength & Vitality Wellness, where she teaches the art of self-care with the same grace, discipline, and spirit of connection that she brings to every class on the mat.

Whether through martial arts or mindset coaching, Senpai Cara-Michele is deeply committed to helping others find balance, strength, and presence in both body and life. When she’s not serving her community, she’s likely in her woodworking shop, finding peace and creativity in the rhythm of sawdust, Japanese pull saws, and cherry wood.

Our practice integrates Tohei’s Four Principles to Unify Mind and Body:

  • Keep one-point
  • Relax completely
  • Keep weight underside
  • Extend Ki

Experience it for yourself. Hang out with us on the mat and explore our unique approach. See how our training can help you build confidence, resilience, and strength in every part of your life.

OUR LINEAGE

ROKA follows the tradition of Kinokawa Ryu Aikido, a style that emphasizes the unconditional acceptance and blending of energy (Ki). Kinokawa, meaning “River of Ki,” represents the seamless flow of energy and movement. This approach balances the practical, martial aspects of Aikido with its deeper purpose of unifying mind, body, and spirit.

Sempai Cara-Michele Nether (3rd-degree black belt), studied under Sensei Kyle Olinger, a 20-year student of Hanshi Michael Wirth. Hanshi Wirth trained under Sensei Maruyama, a student of Koichi Tohei and Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei), the founder of Aikido.
